How to convert an image to under 100KB (or any size limit)

Compression guide · 4 min read

Many online forms — job applications, government portals, exam registrations — set strict file size limits like 50KB, 100KB, or 200KB. Here's the fastest way to hit a target size without guesswork.

Step 1: Convert to JPG if it isn't already

If your image is a PNG or HEIC, convert it to JPG first. JPG's compression is far more effective at reducing file size than PNG, especially for photos.

Step 2: Use the quality slider and watch the live size

The PNG to JPG and JPG to WebP converters on this site show the resulting file size next to the download button as soon as you convert. Adjust the quality slider down — try 80%, then 60%, then 40% — and re-convert until the size shown is under your limit.

Step 3: If quality alone isn't enough, resize the dimensions

Sometimes an image is simply too large in pixel dimensions to hit a tiny size limit (like 50KB) without becoming visibly blurry. In that case, use the image resizer to reduce the width and height first — for example, from 3000px wide down to 1000px wide — then apply JPG compression on top.

Quick reference

Because everything happens locally, you can try a few combinations of quality and size quickly without re-uploading anywhere each time.
